Diving Nikoi Islands – We have this at one of our dive sites at Nikoi islands too!

What creates mysterious circles on the seafloor? No, it’s not aliens of the deep—it’s actually pufferfish hoping to snag a mate, a new study says.

Divers first noticed the 6.5-foot-wide (2-meter-wide) circular structures near Japan‘s Amami-Oshima Island about 20 years ago. But no one knew how these so-called mystery circles were constructed—or what was creating them—until now.

The circles, scientists say, are actually nests created by male pufferfish, which spend about ten days carefully constructing and decorating the structures to woo females. What’s more, this industrious pufferfish is thought to be a new species in the Torquigener genus, according to the study, published July 1 in the journal Scientific Reports.

Nesting Instinct

The male fish, which measures less than 5 inches (13 centimeters) long, first uses his body to create peaks and valleys in the sandy bottom around a central circle of smooth sand. He accomplishes this feat by swimming in toward the center of the circle in a straight line and then back around the center in a circular motion.

Before the female fish arrive to inspect his handiwork, the male forms irregular patterns in the fine sand particles of the central circle. He also decorates the peaks of the outer portion with shell and coral fragments.

When a potential female partner arrives on the scene, the male stirs up the fine sand in the nest’s inner circle. If she deems the nest, and the male who built it, satisfactory, she lays her eggs in the center of the nest and leaves.

Diving Pulau Weh

Situated at the northern tip of the Sumatra and the eastern end of the Andaman Sea, the tranquil Pulau Weh offers a laid-back and low-cost lifestyle with the friendly locals in the villages.

The usual suspects in the sea include turtles, rays, sharks, giant groupers, wrasses, eels, jackfishes, fusiliers, nudibranchs, and many more. Population

There are more than 2,000 known species of nudibranch, and new ones are being identified almost daily. They are found throughout the world’s oceans, but are most abundant in shallow, tropical waters. Their scientific name, Nudibranchia, means naked gills, and describes the feathery gills and horns that most wear on their backs.

Characteristics

Generally oblong in shape, nudibranchs can be thick or flattened, long or short, ornately colored or drab to match their surroundings. They can grow as small as 0.25 inches or as large as 12 inches long.

Behavior

They are carnivores that slowly ply their range grazing on algae, sponges, anemones, corals, barnacles, and even other nudibranchs. To identify prey, they have two highly sensitive tentacles, called rhinophores, located on top of their heads. Nudibranchs derive their coloring from the food they eat, which helps in camouflage, and some even retain the foul-tasting poisons of their prey and secrete them as a defense against predators.

Nudibranchs are simultaneous hermaphrodites, and can mate with any other mature member of their species. Their lifespan varies widely, with some living less than a month, and others living up to one year.

SINGAPORE – The Republic’s largest man-made reef structure to date was installed on Thursday (Nov 8) in the waters off the 3ha Small Sister’s Island. Which is south of Sentosa and about a 45-minute boat ride from Marina South Pier.

It is part of an installation that comprises eight reef structures in total, all fabricated off-site. They will be fully installed by the end of 2018.

When the corals grow, these reef structures are expected to contribute some 1,000 sq m of additional reef substrate to the Sisters’ Islands Marine Park by 2030.

The structures will sit in the 40ha Sisters’ Islands Marine Park, about the size of 50 football fields, which comprises the Big Sister’s Island and the Small Sister’s Island and their surrounding reefs, as well as the western reefs of nearby St John’s Island and Pulau Tekukor.

They are made of materials including concrete, fibreglass pipes, steel and rocks recycled from other JTC projects. Each structure includes nooks and crannies within which various fish species and other forms of sea life may find shelter and thrive.

To date, there has not been a reef installation on a larger scale in Singapore.

PADI Scuba Diving Courses – We dived at Nikoi Island and Batam last weekend with another full board. Open Water, Advanced Open Water students and leisure divers. Mother nature has been kind to us. Despite threatening dark clouds, the storm didn’t come to us except for slight drizzles. Which allowed everyone to enjoy their dives nonetheless. Loads of fantastic time networking with fun-loving divers, great food and awesome diving. As we explored both the Sarawak Maru Wreck and Codd Wreck. Lots of great spotting as always… Turtles, blue-spotted rays, moray eels, octopus, cuttlefish and not forgetting a giant grouper we found at the Codd Wreck!

PADI Scuba Diving Courses – Congratulations to all the Open Water and Advanced Open Water students who were certified!

The monsoon season may be near but we are one of the few dive operators in Singapore who never close shop! Our dive sites are very well-sheltered from the monsoon and definitely still safe to dive during the monsoon.

Wrecks of Indonesia – How many wreck dives can you do on a weekend? We explored both the Igara and Sarawak Maru wreck last weekend, 4 wreck dives in total! Lady luck was on our side, 15-20m viz at Igara Wreck and 8-10m viz at Sarawak Maru Wreck! To sum it all up, everyone had an awesome time networking with fellow divers and even more fun exploring both wrecks. Need we mention our signature BBQ dinner on Saturday night, which satisified all our hunger pangs after an enjoyable night dive? Thank you to all the cool wreck divers who joined us last weekend! Wreck Diving – 3rd to 5th Aug’18 – Igara & Sarawak Maru Wreck Exploration!

Wreck Diving – It was the wreck exploration dive trip everyone was looking forward to! With our full board of leisure divers and Advanced Open Water and Rescue students, we headed for two wreck dives – Igara and Sarawak Maru Wreck. This is something we’ve never attempted before, and we have carefully planned the itinerary to deliver both famous wrecks in the Riau Islands to our enthusiastic divers! Visibility was wonderful at about 15m with lots of beautiful marine life. Everyone had an awesome time exploring the wrecks and bonding during meal times. Look out for our next wreck exploration trip coming your way on 31st Aug – 2nd Sept’18!

We visited the Igara Wreck after a hiatus of more than 2 years and had an awesome time exploring the beautiful and gigantic 300m wreck which sank off the Riau Islands in 1973. Riau Islands – 8 to 10 June 2018

Riau Islands – We spent another well-deserved weekend with our Open Water students and leisure divers to Nikoi Island last weekend. Fun is an understatement when everyone had a groovy time diving the Sarawak Maru Wreck and other beautiful sites in Lagoi and Nikoi Island. Visibility was wonderful at 10-15m with lots of spottings! We were so pleasantly surprised when we saw a Guitar Shark during our first dive! Our first time spotting this rare and beautiful creature diving in the Riau Islands. Hoped you all had enjoyed our warm hospitality, fun dives and sumptuous meals prepared for you on board Seaborne. Looking forward to our long weekend trip this coming Hari Raya!

Scuba Diving Fins

Tioman Juara – 4-6 May 2018

It was the most anticipated weekend everyone was looking forward to! Our first official diving trip to Tioman Juara organised in partnership with Scuba Do, a dive operator in Malaysia.

We have not made any official announcements or big “rara”about this yet! As we were really busy working with our new partner and planning for this first BIG trip!

Tioman Juara may not sound familiar to most, situated in the quieter part of this beautiful island. Away from the busier dive sites in the more populated areas. ScubaDo is one of the few dive centres there, so there’s really no fighting with other operators for dive spots. It’s a gem in itself, check out the video below and you’ll know why! Or better still, come join us!

We had a full board of leisure divers and Rescue students with us to Juara and it was loads of great fun! Viz was wonderful at 15m with lots of beautiful marine life.

Spotted turtles, sharks, pufferfish, porcupine fish, nudibranch, stingrays and lots more! Night dive was awesome too! Interested in marine conservation, will be glad to know that Juara Turtle Project located nearby dedicated to sea turtle conservation, research and education.

Nikoi Island – Trip Report – 13 to 15 April 2018

Nikoi Island – We spent another wonderful weekend with a full board of Open Water and Advanced Open Water students and leisure divers to Nikoi Island and Batam on Seaborne. Everyone had fun exploring the gigantic WWII Sarawak Maru Wreck and other beautiful dive sites. Night dive was fantastic as always with spotting of giant pufferfish, cuttlefish, shrimps, crabs, catfish and more. We also spotted a turtle, porcupine fish, stingrays, nudibranch, seahorse and lots more during the day dives. Congratulations to all our OWD and AOW students who got certified last weekend! And to all leisure divers who have joined us, thanks for your great company and hope you have enjoyed our hospitality and yummy food on board!

Diving Tioman – Trip Report – Tioman Juara 6 to 8 April 2018

Diving Tioman – Last weekend, some our of crew headed over to Juara in Tioman Island for an exploration dive trip. We did a couple of shore dives and one boat dive. Viz was wonderful at 15-20m! Marine life was awesome too, as we spotted turtles, porcupine fish, lots of nudibranch, moray eels, stingrays and more.

Juara is a gem in Tioman Island, a quiet getaway as there are not many dive centres operating there yet, unlike the usual over- populated dive sites in Tioman.

Open Water course and Advanced Open Water students, well done! Congratulations to all students who were certified. It’s a dive trip over the long Good Friday and Easter weekend with a full board of fun-loving and awesome divers! Diving Trips – Trip Report – 16 to 18 March 2018

Diving Trips – One of our best diving trips this season! With our full board of over 15 Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue students and leisure divers on Seaborne, we went on an expedition to our favourite Nikoi Islands. Viz was wonderful between 12-15m, making diving at the Sarawak Maru Wreck and reef sites so awesome. The best surprise last weekend was when our group of divers spotted a school of over 20 Bump Heads at a reef site, our first encounter with these beautiful marine animals in Nikoi! While others fly to Tulamben in Bali to swim with Bump Heads at the USAT Liberty Wreck, we could find them in Nikoi! What more can we ask for! A million thanks to all who joined us last weekend! Our trip is made perfect because of your presence and wonderful support!

Diving Batam Bintan – Our weekend diving trips can’t get any better! With a wonderful viz of 12-15m last weekend, we dived at Nikoi Island and Batam with a group of 10 leisure divers and Open Water students. It’s the start of the season, and every week it’s a load of great fun and enjoyment as we dive the beautiful reef and wreck sites in Batam & Bintan. Last weekend, we spotted a torpedo ray, blue spotted rays, pufferfish, cuttlefish, octopus, nudibranch and more! Simply a heaven for macro photographers and anyone who enjoys exploring the underwater world! Looking forward to more awesome weekends on Seaborne!

Exploration Diving – Trip Report – CNY Weekend 16 to 18 February 2018

Exploration Diving – Huat ah! It’s Chinese New Year weekend on board Seaborne with 12 leisure divers, Advanced Open Water students and GS-Diving crew. We went diving at Nikoi Island again after a hiatus of 2 months, as it’s the start of the dive season. How we missed the beautiful Sarawak Maru Wreck! It looks as good as ever (probably even better!) with a wonderful viz of 10-12m. We also dived at the Codd Wreck and other beautiful reef sites around Batam. Lots of spotting last weekend! Nudibranchs, pufferfish, stingrays, squid, octopus, cuttlefish and more! Thank you everyone for spending your wonderful CNY weekend with us. What a great start to the Year of the Dog! Wishing everyone a prosperous and happy lunar new year!

Scuba Diving Lessons – It was an all-crew and trainee weekend on board Seaborne to Pulau Pangkil and Batam! Fun is simply an understatement with a bunch of 12 crazy folks learning from each other and having a great time bonding and diving together. Wonderful spotting of beautiful marine animals last weekend. Sea turtle, bat fish, stone fish, octopus, squid, box fish, barracudas, nudibranch and so much more! Thank you folks for making the last weekend so wonderful. Looking forward to the next diving trip together!

Diving Lessons – It’s a brand new start because it’s our first weekend trip to Batam in 2018! With our full board of Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue students and leisure divers, we spent 3D2N on Seaborne having loads of fun diving, knowing new like-minded friends and feasting away. We pride ourselves on our warm hospitality, friendly crew and instructors and best of all delicious meals whipped up by our experienced Indonesian chef. Ask anyone who has been on Seaborne and they are sure to rave about how well-fed they are. Congratulations to all students who have attained their PADI diving certifications last weekend.
