Trip Report 14 & 15 January

It’s 6.50am Saturday morning and I’m at Republic of Singapore Yacht Club waiting on my students and it’s very dark.  I make myself a coffee and wipe the sleep from my eyes.

My students arrive on time and we head out for the first two dives of their PADI Open Water Diver Course.  I warn them about the lack of viz at Hantu at the moment.

Our first two dives were done in less than 1 metre viz (more like 60cm) and there was not much to see, so we did alot of skills and headed for home at 11am.

It’s 6.50am Sunday morning and I’m at Republic of Singapore Yacht Club waiting on my students and again it’s very dark.  I make myself a coffee and wipe the sleep from my eyes.  Seems like dejavu.

My students arrive on time and we head out for the second two dives on their PADI Open Water Course.  We laugh about yesterday’s viz and prepare ourselves for the same.

When we got to the jetty I could see that the water was a different colour and we were very happy to see 3-4 metre viz during the first dive of the day.  It was so good we did a 50 minute dive.  There were loads of fish.

We saw Rabbitfish, Batfish, Rainbow Runners and at least 50 Pomfrets.  There was also loads of Coralfish and loads of other small fast fish that I could not identify.

My students surfaced after this dive with huge grins and loads of talk about how great that dive was.

We did the 4th and final dive of the course in not so good viz.  Unfortunately, the previous divers had made a mess and the silt was everywhere.  A sand (silt?) storm at its best.

Not to worry, we completed the dive and congrats to Sahifali and Chandrakant for completing their PADI Open Water Diver Course.

As part of the PADI Dive Master Course, my two Dive Master Trainees – DMTs (Georgie and David) did their mapping project on Sunday.   I look forward to seeing their detailed map of the Hantu jetty.
